2000 MORE SPACE TO CONQUER

Since the summer of 2000 a hilltop in the Serra da Estrella at the river the Mondego in the Guarda  area ( Portugal ), has no longer been the same as it was before . In two weeks time Dedden and Keizer have realized a land-art project MORE SPACE TO CONQUER, their contribution to Mond-eco Art festival. By cutting fire corridors (approx. 4 m. wide) in the vegetation on the hilltop , the outlines of a house arose as in a line drawing. The drawing has a width of 40 m ,to 60 m length and  as a Landmark already visible from a distance. This region has had a lot to suffer from the fact that many occupants pull away to the large cities.
This is a big disadvantage for the vitality of the region, but also the preservation of the landscape suffers from this drain. There is a direct relation between ,what happens with the landscape and human activity and settlement. The picture is a metaphor for the reciprocal dependence of people and landscape . Deforestation, erosion and bushfires are both impact of human activity ,as well as is depopulation of the area.
